Is ther any way to tell kmail to use another directory, rather than the
default of Mail?

You may keep your mail wherever you wish, and create ~/Mail symlink
there. Or ...

Checking sources ... seems that ~/Mail is hardcoded (exactly in
kmail/kmkernel.cpp).
But you are in the Open Source world - just change sources and recompile
!

Seems a rather stupid thing to hard code. Why the fsck would any
program require a recompile just to change mail directories?

Feel free to fix that and send a patch to kmail maintainers :-).
