hi all,

why does kde, when compiled from scratch, sometimes install in
/opt/kde, and othertimes to /usr/local/kde? when I first installed
kde2.0 it went to /opt/kde, now I am compiling and installing kde2.0.1
and it is going to /usr/local/kde. I don't really care where it goes
but I would like to know why this is happening?? thanks for any info!

The default prefix is set in the configure script. But both KDE2.0 and
KDE2.0.1 are supposed to end up in /usr/local by default, so I guess
that you compiled KDE2.0 using the ./configure -prefix=/opt/kde option.

I read the directions for KDE 2.0.0 and it says to set a KDEDIR variable
(e.g. KDEDIR=/opt/kde2/).  So I did exactly that - I set the KDEDIR to
/opt/kde2/ - so I know why mine is installing there.

Maybe check to see if you have a KDEDIR variable for some reason.  If you
don't, it should go to /usr/local/kde

If $KDEDIR is set, it is used as the default prefix.
If not, /usr/local is used.

It is possible to enforce prefix (configure --prefix=/whatever/you/wish)
