Personally, I prefer installing each new version in a directory with the
full version number. Currently I have 3.0.2, 3.0.8, 3.0.7, 3.0.1, and CVS.
I symlink /opt/kde to whichever version I want to use, and that way I
don't have to worry about editing environmental variables. Plus I can
easily fall back on an old version. (though I probably don't need 4 old
versions)
Also, I don't think it matters whether you do it in single- or multi-user
mode. I always have done mine in multi-user. In addition, it shouldn't
matter what modifications you've made to your system. I use Slackware 8.1,
but I'm currently running 3.0.8 off Redhat RPMs. The system doesn't care.
Try the binaries before you spend all that time compiling. Particularly
since 3.1 final is so close. (possibly as soon as Nov. 18)
