Kdat <no tape> error but tape drive works?

I'm stuck.  I'm running RH7.3 using an IDE tape drive.  All mt commands work
fine.  kbackup also works fine.  I can't get Kdat to recognize that a tape
is in the drive.  I've changed the preferences to /dev/nht0 (this is what I
use for kbackup and mt) but it still says there's no tape present.  Does
anybody know what I'm doing wrong?  Thanks in advance.

is FAT32, and the second is NTFS.  I can successfully mount the first, but
not the second.  Any ideas?
