pdf (and Mimetypes ?)

Apologies if this question is in the FAQ but -

How do I get kfm to open pdf files with acroread by default. At the moment it
tries to open them with the k postscript viewer. I've tried a number of
different things with a complete lack of success. I'd be grateful if somebody
could point me in the write direction.

I am relatively a newbie to KDE too, but here's how I got things to work for me:

Do you have a kdelnk file to Adobe Acrobat Reader already? If so, you can skip
the step where I explain how to add the Reader to your applications.

How to get the reader in your Applications:

- Open kfm, choose Edit -> Applications from the menu
- In the folder of your choice (I chose "Applications", for example),
right-click and choose
New -> Application from the sub-menu
- You will be presented with an edit box that has: "Program.kdelnk" in it.
Change that to
    "acroread.kdelnk" or any other name
- You will then have a new item in that folder... Right-click on the icon, and
choose "Properties"
- Go to the "Execute" tab, and type in the full path to your Adobe Acrobat
Reader....

You now have a working link to your reader. Here's how you configure KDE to open
the Adobe Reader when you click on .PDF files..

- Go to the "Application" tab in the "Properties" dialog...
- In "Binary Pattern", type "acroread;"
- In "Comment", type whatever you want. It will be the "hint" that KDE gives for
the reader...
- In "Name (in your language)", type what you want to appear in the menus... I
have
"Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0", for example...

Here's the trick to make sure Adobe Reader opens when you click on a PDF file..:

- The bottom left listbox should be empty by now, and the bottom right listbox
should contain all the mimetypes
    available.
- Find "application/pdf" in the right listbox, and click on the "<-"
button. This will put it in the left listbox.

That's it! Click on "OK", and you're done. You should now get the Adobe Acrobat
Reader whenever you click on a .PDF file. I know that doing just that worked
magic for me.

Good luck,

Charles Boivin

Open the menueditor, locate acrobat, rightclick and
choose "change" (or maybe "edit", I'm not running an english KDE.)
Click the Applicationtab and add "application/pdf" from the right
list to the left. You may want to remove the pdt-binding from
th k-postscriptviewer while you're at it....
Restart and hope for the best...

Good luck

After adding Acrobat Reader as application(described in other posts) and
associating application/pdf files to it, you can edit the mimelnk for
application/pdf and choose Acrobat REader as default application for it.

All described in the KFM help.

Why do you pay BIG BUCKS for "micro" software with BIG BUGS?

1. Apache PDF mimetype

Greetings.

Who knows why a PDF file deliverd by Apache 1.3 has the browser ask for
a password (because - apparently - the PDF has been secured), whereas
IIS just delivers the .pdf  - no questions asked.
The mime definitions for both servers look exactly the same. The browser
used has no effect (NS/IE 3/4)
Evidently IIS is a bit more careless about PDF security, but on the
other hand the password is ment as read-only security. With Apache you
the need password even to see the file.
Is there anything in Apache's conf files that can be tailored so that it
will deliver any PDF's for viewing?

Thnx in advance.
