RPM-Error--After RH-Updates-Please Help!!

Post by Snoopy :-) » Sat, 13 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Using RH 5.2.  I have Downloaded From RedHat and installed the following
Updates.
        1.     Rpm 3.0.2-5 (i386)-upgrade
         2.    XFree86 3.3.5-1.5x upgrades
After Installation everything seemed to be Screwed up in Xwindows.

Just to Clarify things.
1.     The RPM seem to work in Command Line as well as in "Xterm"
        Terminal.
2.    But in Xwindows (Conrol_Panell) I can't Open up
The Package Mngr "glint" or in KDE The "KPackage"
3.    I am also using  KDE (loged in as a different "user") and when
I tried using the "KDE_Package Manager" I got the same error
4.    Also If I try to Open "glint" in Command line in Xterm
I always receive the Error Message as follows:

"rpm error: cannot open database in /var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm"

However I've checked it; and this Directory and the Files  exist.

5.    The Other Applications seem to work. However when I logout
I Noticed some changes in the "Logout-Screen" regardin SVGA
        And a "Warning Message:
                    usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi
does not exist.  entry deleted from Path.

In the Xfree86 upgrades I didn't download these fonts,
I've downloaded the 75dpi-fonts.  Since this is what I had before.

I hope some one can help me to straighten this mess out.
Thanx in advance.
Best regards
Snoopy ;-((

Because thou never rebuilt thy rpm database. They were  changes
made to /var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm. U'll need to do as root
rpm --rebuilddb

You can either download these fonts and install them, delete
the entry in your XF86Config file or ignore the warning...

Thank you for your reply.
I followed your suggestion (rpm --rebuilddb) but Unfortunatelly "glint'
still doesn't work. I've red the HOWTO's and the ManPage again,  as well as
the (3) but I could'nt Find any refereces to this Problem.
 The error message
"rpm error: cannot open database in /var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm"
seem to indicate some sort of a "Link" problem.
But I am to much of a Newbie to be able to find the solution.

At least RPM (in command line) works.  What I find strange is that the
KDE Pkg-Mngr gives the same error message as when I give the
command "glint &" in Xterm.
I am a Newbie, and still am very unconfortable working in command line; so I
just keep on hoping for some help in finding a solution.
Best regards
Snoopy

Yep, you are right. Glint and kpack[age|viewer] don't work,
won't work. And it is my fault for not tell you to recompile
both of them as the versions you have will anly work with
the old versions.
My humble apologies. For glint you'll have to step up in
version. For kpack[age|viewer], grab the source and compile.

Now, that's what I call service :-))
Thanks for the quick reply.
I have 2 questions and I hope you're not going to start charging me :-)

1.  Where can I get an update for glint?
I went to RH-Home Page But I can't seem to find any reference
in the RH- 5.2- Updates.  To be frank, I am somewhat disappointed
in RH promoting updates which will*up other Applications
without any Warnig to users.  Especially since I am sure they are
aware of the problems Newbies have coming from MS to Learn
Linux.  Also It seems, that I've read it somewhere, that in RH 6x
    "glint" is no longer used.

2. I am not sure how to do what you suggest regarding KDE.
That is; the steps to "grab the Source and Compile", But I am
going to give it a try and let you know.

I really appreciate your help.  I've been fooling around with this for the
past 4-5 days and have not been able to find any solution.  Which to say the
least upseting the balance of the internal and the external
pressure in my poor little head :-((
Best regards;

RH has stopped developing glint and do not include it anymore. It is
replace by 'gnorpm' (from gnome guys I think). I don't use either, so
can't say if this is good or bad.

You might try getting the src.rpm and doing 'rpm --rebuild <src.rpm>' to
see if that helps. This will use the libs you have installed and
sometimes solves this kind of problem. See the rpm man page.

Hi Hal :-)
Thank you for your reply.  Finally I know that glint is out dated.
Since I haven't the foggiest idea how to do anything with regards to the
"source rpm" I might*things up worst than I have so far.

Since all my problems started with the upgrade to the new RPM 3.0x
Maybe I should reinstall the previous version 2.5.5x??  What would be your
suggestion??  Or is it possible that the problem was created by the XFree86
3.3.5-1 Upgrade??
Thanx for everything.
Best regards

Probably glint isn't working with the newer rpm. Just guesing since I
never really used it. Won't hurt anything to try going pack. Generally
rpm makes this kind of thing very easy. Check the man page first for
'--oldpackage' or whatever its called.

Hi Hal :-))
Bingo!!!  Good News!!!!
I was able to Solve the Problem, and "glint"  Works OK.

I Re-Installed the oldpackage "rpm-2.5.5-5.2.i386.rpm",
and to be sure; after the Reinstall I also did the " rpm --rebuilddb"

For the benefit of Other Newbies Here is the Example:
        1.    rpm -Uvh --oldpackage rpm-2.5.5-5.2 <click Enter>
        2.    rpm --rebuilddb <click-Enter>
"glint" works now both in the Control-Panel, and in Comand-Mode.

While I am happy, that after 4-days of aggrevation the Problem is solved.
I am OUTRAGED with the *y REDHAT People.!!!
They have had the  Goddamn Rpm-3.0.2-5x.i386.rpm. listed as an Udate and Fix
for RH 5.2. since July.  I am sure, that by now they are quite aware, that
this Upgrade will disable the "glint-Package-Manager" as well a the KDE
"Package-manager", and as Such;
Will Create all kinds of Nightmares to Newbies coming to Linux.

I've also been watching the RH News Groups (including linux.redhat.rpm) and
have not seen Any-Inputs from the RH-People.
I guess they think, that they are to Big to care about
"Good-Public-Relations. They sure seem to behave just like MICROSOFT.

I bought the 5.2 Distribution from RH earlier this year only to find a few
weeks later the 6.x was released, with not just the Install-Guide, but also
a Users-Guide.  But to get 6.x I would have had to pay full Price.
Even Microsoft hasn't pulled a stunt like this.  And this latest Garbage
Experience really put the lid on it.  As far as I am concerned they can
shove their Upgrades etc..  I will be a long time before I consider spending
any money for Their Prodocts.  I will also discourage any one from doing so
.

Best Regards
Snoopy ;-((
