Unusual Kpppd question for Linux Gods!

My telephone line does not receive a dial tone immediately. In Windows 95
there is an option to not check for dialtone.  I also put some commas in my
phone number to wait a few seconds before dialing.  Everything works fine.

How the hell do I do this in Llinux? Every time Kpppd goes to dial out it
returns a "No Dialtone error!".

Have I finally found a feature in Windows that Linux doesn't have?

Stede.

I was running kde 1.1.1. or  the latest one, and there was a option for
dialtone. I downloaded it at FTP site under redhat 6.0 updates and then
did a rmp * install went nicely. and im not even close to a god! I have
been playing with linux for 2 weeks now. Im going with Calidra 2.2 its
teaming up with KDE  REd hat looks to be pushing gnome.

1. Unusual Question: Anyone tried remote shutdown of a Linux server???

Hi;
I would like to be able to remotely shutdown my linux box (using "shutdown"), from one of the workstations... Here's the catch.
I want to be able to do this without loging in telnet or other junk, just as normal user. I suppose this can be done easy but right now with all the diald stuff I'm trying to fix and figure out, this seems a mile away..

Any bright ideas out there.??? I run Redhat 5.2 server on an i486 box, with NFS, IPMasq, IPFwd, Netware Em, Print Share, etc.
