"kdeinit" tasks eating CPU

Post by Andreas Klaue » Tue, 01 Jul 2003 21:55:04

Hi,

'top' shows me two "kdeinit" tasks eating my CPU:

PID USER      PR  NI  VIRT  RES  SHR S %CPU %MEM    TIME+  Command
 1163 andreas   16   0 35936  35m  34m R 44.7  7.0  22:50.41 kdeinit
 1452 andreas   16   0 35940  35m  34m R 44.7  7.0  22:37.40 kdeinit

They seem to use the exact same amount of CPU and memory...
does anyone know what the hell these tasks are doing?

I'm using KDE 3.1.2 release. I have only one KDE session running.
Please ask if you need any further information about my system.

Press "c" to view the entire "command line" for the process. Then it'll say
something like  kdeinit: konqueror and you'll know what the offending
processes are. Usually it's a bug in an app that makes it eat up CPU time
like this, although 3.1.2 is much better than, say, 3.0 was in this
respect.

Okay, here goes:

 1163 andreas   16   0 33980  29m  29m R 49.3  5.9  78:59.29 kdeinit: konqueror --silent
 1452 andreas   15   0 33984  28m  28m R 49.3  5.7  78:46.27 kdeinit: konqueror --silent

I closed all konqueror and file browser windows, but those two still remain.
'ps -A | grep konqueror' doesn't find anything.

Is it safe to kill these two processes?

I should think so. They are clearly processes that have gone wrong if they
are using all the CPU!

I find sometimes konqueror processes that were displaying animations or some
sort of plugin remain after the browser has closed.

The processes don't show up with ps as they are called "kdeinit". You need
to tell ps to display the command line too, but I can't remember how to do
that with ps (I've never really understood the three different conventions
for ps options!)

Thanks. Killed them. KDE still running, those two processes had
no influence on anything whatsoever... weird thing, but oh well...

Thanks for helping me out, Jonathan!
