KDE refuse to start after 'startx' in normal user mode

Post by root » Mon, 08 Mar 1999 04:00:00

Whenever I try to 'startx' logged in as a normal user, I get the
gray screen and my window manager (kde) refuses to load.
The error says it couldn't do xinit or connect to the x server because
of some permission is denied...  I have no problem running everything
as root.. Anyone has suggestions as to why this is? Also how come
I can't run at 32 bit color with startx -- -bpp 32 ?

any help is greatly appreciated!!

The rpms I downloaded for KDE 1.1 didn't have the permissions set up
correctly, and a number of directories in the /opt/kde tree (including
/opt/kde, opt/kde/share and certain directories under opt/kde/share)
didn't have execute and read permissions set for users.  I do not know
if this has since been corrected, but you could try checking this.

Do you have enough video memory?  Just a thought.

1. Normal user can't startx: no console ownership?

I'm running RedHat 5.2 on a single PII machine, and have finally succeeded
in running X on it as root.  However, I can't use it as any other user.
I can create users at the CLI and X, but the following message appears:
"Authentication failed: can't start X-server.  Perhaps you do not have
console ownership?
<PAUSE>
X_11 TransSocketUNIXConnect errno=2
"

What do I need to do to run X?

Thanks,

Giles RC Morant
