Hello !
I have installed RedHat 7.2 with KDE 2.2.
When I look in a directory with BMP files, the picture of the file show up
as a ICON. Is it possible to do the same with JPG files?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the format needs to be in
either png or bmp.  So, if you have any jpg's, just convert them to png's
and try it out.  You should be able to convert them with many image editing
programs such as gimp and ee.

Nope, it should preview jpegs, and gifs too.
(behavior reverts to just icon with view->preview->)
Perhaps you are missing a library like libjpeg<xxx> though I'm afraid I
don't really know the reason.

Also make sure you compiled QT with support for an external jpeg library.
It does not come with one, you need to get your own (though RH probably has
one) and tell it to use it.  Otherwise jpegs in KDE will not render at all.
If you can view jpegs, and you are using an rpm version of KDE, there
probably was a bug in the rpm build.  In that case, try making KDE and Qt
from source (these are of the easier programs to compile in the linux
world).  As a speed hint, disable that icon previewing thing someplace in
preferences.  KDE is pretty and robust, but that comes at the price of
speed; there's really no way around that, save for compiler optimizations
and really tight code.  Give them credit.

1. kcmdisplay and kview, show no jpg files

recently I cannot display any jpg files as a background with kcmdisplay
nor with kview anymore. XV still works with jpg. BMP files still show
up with kview and kcmdisplay. Happens only as a user, root still shows
files.

When a jpg file is in the config file for the desktop, kcmdisplay does
not even show its window and kview shows up for a second, then shuts
down.
Start from Konsole gives with kcmdisplay:

X Error: BadDrawable
(invalid Pixmap or Window parameter) 9
Major opcode: 72

kview renders:

write failed on temporary file
-- out of diskspace?

Q: Were does kview like to write the temp file to? To /tmp???
So I might have a problem with permissions... but why does xv OK?

System:  SuSE 6.1 with 2.2.7 kernel and KDE 1.1.1 on Workstation (have
2.2.10 only on server but without X window installed, workstation just
sucks the pictures from there)
I didn't use rpms but just compiled KDE (egcs 1.1.1 and glibc2.0 still)

* found a question like this already on djnews but does not seem to be
answered yet *

Any hint will be very much appreciated, Thank you in advance
