I am told that to make AA work, I need to install freetype fonts.  Where
can I get those?  Does AA work with TrueType or Type1 fonts?

It works with both type1 and tt.

You'll need to edit your XftConfig file (it's at /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 on my
system), if you add additional scalable font directories.
