I cannot go to "pangea.stanford.edu" if I type "pangea" when I am on
Stanford campus computer.

When I use MS explorere or Netscape, I usually type only "pangea" to go to
"pangea.stanford.edu", and it never causes a problem.  Is there a way I can
get out of this problem?  Thank you.

Sure, change /etc/resolv.conf

This only works e.g. for a server foo if you type "http://foo", but not if
you just type "foo".
