Installing KDE 3.0 off the Red Hat 7.3 discs

I recently install Redhat 7.3 with just the Gnome desktop. I would now
like to install the KDE desktop as well. What is the easiest way to do
this?

Might as well wait and put KDE 3.01 on.  The rpms for redhat should
be out any day now.

Try upgrade ?
(Don't format any drives, and do a custom install).

The easiest way is to stick disk 1 in the cdrom drive, become root, cd
to /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS.

From there you could try "ls -1 | grep kde" to get a list of the kde
packages.  Then install the ones you want using rpm.

For example:

rpm -i kdebase-3.0.0-12.i386.rpm
rpm -i kdeaddons-konqueror-3.0.0-4

etcetera.. (as a minimum you need kdebase)

If you get failed dependencies, then install the dependencies first.
Once you get KDE installed and up and running you can add additional
packages as you need them like games, multimedia, etc.

Next time you login (assuming you are using a graphical login) choose
kde as the system you want to start with instead of Gnome.

Good Luck,

You could always just pop in the install CD's and do the RPM installs by
hand - mind you, there is a particular sequence to install them - I think
it's like ARTS first, then the QT stuff, then the LIBS - then after all
that rigamorole, the BASE then everything after that (then make sure you
do either an ldconfig or reboot after you're done)

Did that for a customer and it worked all right - didn't want to do the
custom install and chance mucking up something in his rather STABLE GNOME
environment...(grin)
