KDE overwrites my resources!

I'm trying out KDE 2.1.1, and the only thing (well, except for
undecorated windows) I don't like is that startkde overwrites my X
resources. (I set the resources in my .xinitrc, and later exec the
$WINDOWMANAGER.) Can I put a call to xrdb somewhere so that it will
take effect _after_ startkde has done its work, or can I register X
resources somewhere in the Control Center?

Firstly, kde has hundreds of themes that include window decorations go
startmenu-preferences-looknfeel-thememanager although you may have to
install some as a default install only comes with 3 or 4. You can also
use separate widget themes, see Styles in LooknFeel.

Also in the Styles page untick the *Use kde colors and fonts and it
wont affect your X resources. It does this to give x apps the same
color, font themes as selected for kde to get a uniform desktop.

1. Overwriting old KDE with new compiled version?

Hi all,

I've compiled new KDE 3.1 into /opt/kde for testing purposes. I've got
previous version installed from RPM into /usr. Now i would like to
overwrite previous version and use it as my first desktop. Is there any way
to install compiled binaries into /usr to overwrite current installation
without building it again (it takes lot of time to compile :( ). I have
been using konstruct to compile KDE sources on my Mandrake 9.0 box.
