Firewall software - what's available?

I've been asked to quickly find out what firewall software is
freely available.  We're talking about a bastion-host setup for a
link that has throughput of about 3/4 of a T1 of bandwidth, so
I'm supposed to tell them what kind of a platform they need and what
software they can run.

Can someone point me in the right direction for this?  I'd certainly
appreciate your help...
