damnit i'm going crazy trying to figure out what the hell redhat 6 did
to my internet... the internet was working just fine with redhat 5.2's
default internet setup but then when i upgraded and even tried doing 2
fresh re-installs, i lost my internet... i am on cable modem and get my
ip via dhcp... i've tried all the basic troubleshooting layed out
in "linux unleashed" but gets me nowhere... the error i get when i try
pinging www.yahoo.com or another outside ip is "unknown host." i have
specified my isp's dns server in /etc/hosts but no luck.  ifconfig
looks normal and the same with resolv.conf... help.

The DNS server goes in /etc/resolv.conf not /etc/hosts and must be
listed as an IP (for obvious reasons).

You could also use linuxconf or netcfg to change this or use pump to
get it from the dhcp server.

Hope this helps,

There have been alot of problems like yours with Redhat 6.  Check
DejaNews for old postings.

Redhat 6.0, by default, uses a program called pump to get dynamic ip
addresses. Apparently pump is supposed to work for both DHCP and BOOTP.
There was some problem with the version of pump that shipped with
Redhat 6.0.  An update is available from the Redhat support server.

I'm not using pump at all. Instead I modified the ifup and ifdown
scripts in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts to use dhcpcd directly. You
can tell if this will work for you by issuing the dhcpcd command at a
shell prompt (as root). Before doing so, create a directory /etc/dhcpc.
This is where dhcpcd will put the info it gets from the dhcp server.
You'll have to copy the resolve.conf file that get created in /etc/dhcpc
to /etc.

Try upgrading pump first. If that doesn't work, try dhcpcd. I can mail
you my ifup and ifdown scripts if you'd like. Let me know.

Can you ping your DNS server from your Linux box ? If you can't then you
don't get connection to the internet yet.
