Could you be more specific about what you mean by "secure"? I would
say that opening an SSH session to a reading machine with no NNRPd
might suit your requirements - but NNTP is not encrypted, and only
offers a minimal amount of authentication.

Read the INNd docs again. You can grant seperate R/P (Read/Post) access,
but must find 1. a newsreader capable of supporting this, 2. the time
to manage passwords individually for each allowed reader.

Earlier I posted about looking for a secure ftp server. Well that was a
mental fart. I am actually looking for a secure news server.

Or maybe I did ask for a secure news server. Wow, way too many hours in
the office.

Actually I am looking for a news server in which I can password protect
certain newsgroups. I don't believe this is an option with innd. For
example, it would be nice to have a newsgroup for the deans of our
school to post yet the general students would not be able to view the
posts.

I don't think you can do much better than INN in those regards, if you intend
to keep it as a news setup...

The best you can do with INN (as far as I can think of) is limit groups by
the hostname/IP that is connecting (ie. the Dean and faculty computers)...

If I were you though, I'd setup a mailing list (listserv or majordomo), and
use one of the many third-party tools to post the mailing to a webpage...
then you can put the webpage behind a psuedo-firewall (maybe Javascript passwd
access...)...

Take a look at the man page of nnrp.access. You can assign a passwd
for a specific group.

If the newsreader supports it that is.

If newreader support is a problem, you could use the
MajorDomo/news interface and require "Approved" headers
on the e-mails to the Majordomo list (which would be an
empty list that merely forwards into the news system).
