Crack 5.0a with Solaris 2.6 NIS+

Crack 5.0a with Solaris 2.6 NIS+

Post by Craig Stewar » Sat, 15 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Assuming Crack 5.0a is the latest Crack version available, how is the
pasword file on which Crack runs created in a Sun Solaris 2.6 NIS+
environment. Is it enough to do

"niscat passwd.org_dir > passwd.crack"

then "Crack passwd.crack"?

Thanks

No because the admin of the machines was (hopefully) smart enougth to
make the "passwd"-hash data unreadable for everyone (this is possible as
NIS+ uses the data in cred.org_dir, the passwd-entries in passwd.org_dir
are only required if the NIS+ server runns in YP-compatibility mode...).

You can try your luck on the 192bit DES keys (if you find a tool for
this... =:-) - but starting with Solaris 2.7 you may be out of luck as
it supports dh-640bit and dh-1024bit credentials (requires patch >=
106942-07, otherwise automounter will hang sometimes...).

If the NIS+ server has readable passwd-entries in passwd.org_dir: K***
your admin (slowly)...

Bye,
Roland

1. Compiling Crack on Solaris 2.6

Just downloaded crack v. 5a

Trying to build it on Solaris 2.6 with cc (WorkShop Compilers 4.2)

I'm just trying tom install it as a vanilla product ie no tweaking of
"Crack" or makefiles etc.

Have compiled libdes as instructed, and run make install (instructions
are very vague as to whether this is required or not - I've tried with
and without).

Anyhow, libdes goes OK, but when I come to crack itself...

So - has anybody successfully built crack v 5 (c50a to be precise) on a
Solaris box, and what have I blatanbtly missed from this compketely
vanilla installation?
