Installation on a PMac 6500

Hi-

I am trying to install LinuxPPC on a PowerMac 6500. Actually, I have it
installed okay, but booting is the problem. It won't boot.

I have it installed on an external SCSI drive (ID #4). The linux
partitions are the first 3 partitions after the driver. (there is also a
MacOS partition, but that is last).

screen goes black, and the red light goes on on my APS SCSI drive. Nothing
else.

Also, how does one get into OF on a 6500? The command-option-O-F key
combination does not work. The screen remains black.

If anyone has set up LinuxPPC on a 6500, I could use some tips.

Thanks-
Bill

Hi Bill,
I have Linux booting off a PowerMac 6500/250, but I'm using the internal
IDE drive ( the stock one that came with it - I believe a Western Digital
model.)
If you can't get the scsi drive working I'll send you my
configuration. It boots from the Internal Drive.I never could get into OF
either,so I used Bootvars. Later...

Donald

What boot device/file cobination did you use? I have a 6400 which
refuses to boot stright from the internal IDE drive (the LPPC partition
is no. 6), but will boot from the LPPC partition if I start from the
fd:installer.coff.

PS You can get into OF by turning off autoboot in Bootvars

regards

Seth

1. Problems dialing with a PMac 6500/250

I recently moved, and it appears that I cannot use my dial up account any
more through Linux PPC...it was working fine before the move but now, 1/2
way through the connection tones, the modem begins to initialize itself
again.  I think that it has something to do with the old/low quality phone
lines I have in my new residence, but I am not 100% sure. (Connecting
through the MacOS shows that I only connect at 28800, but before I was
always getting 46000 or so... and nothing has changed at the dialup
center).

When I use kppp  the following happens:
The modem is initialized and the it dials the number.
The connection tones go through 1/2 of the number the MACOS now does.
At the 1/2 way point, the modem reports "No Carrier" and begins
re-initializing.

Things I have done:
The only thing different is disabling call waiting (placing a *70, before
the phone number).  I have tried this with and without the *70,  .
With the *70, the modem connects, 1/2 the tones sound, and then the
Debugger window is filled with gibberish.

Placing extra commas at the end of the phone number - Pauses the
connection tones, but still no change.

Any thoughts?
