netcfg question...

Post by Mike Willhid » Mon, 27 Sep 1999 04:00:00

Hi,
I've been successfully connecting via PPP through netcfg for a while.
When creating the new PPP interface, there's an option to allow all
users to connect/disconnect.  How do I bring up that connection as
another user, without running netcfg (You must be root to run netcfg)?
Thanks.

Michael

If you have hte option that allows users to connect/disconnect enabled,
you should be able to use the ifup command to activate the connection.

Try:

/sbin/ifup ppp0

/sbin/ifdown ppp0

The ifdown command disconnects you, btw. :)

Sometimes ifup commands can get confused -- killall ifup and killall
pppd are good commands to whip out when things aren't working, along
with liberal use of tail -f /var/log/messages and ps ax | grep ppp. :)

Once you've enabled users to connect/disconnect, to open the connection type
`ifup ifcfg-ppp0' at a prompt (minus quotes).  To close your connection, use
'ifdown ifcfg-ppp0'.  These are the network connect scripts found in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts.

If you're using WindowMaker, there's a nice dockapp called 'wmppp' that makes
connecting and disconnecting as easy as clicking a button.  Get it at
http://www.mezaway.org/dockapps/wmppp.html.
