YDL 2.3 + PB3500 + Lucent wireless PCMCIA card: how to connect to AirPort base station?

Post by Ad » Thu, 16 Jan 2003 19:05:24

Hi all,

I've just successfully installed Yellow Dog Linux 2.3 on my PowerBook
3500 (a.k.a 'Kanga'). I have a Lucent Orinoco Silver wireless PCMCIA
card that I used to use with this machine to connect to a graphite
AirPort base station under Mac OS 9.1.

Is it possible to configure my PB under Linux to connect to my
existing AirPort base station, or to file share with my
wireless-enabled iMac DV running OS 10.2?

I would stress that I'm a relative newbie to Linux, so a gentle walk
through of any method would be very gratefully received!

Thanks in advance,

Ade

I do not have an answer, but a question: Is the card reconiced by Linux?

Hi Enrique,

Thanks for getting back to me. The card isn't automatically detected
as far as I can see. How (and where) can I check its settings?

I think you have to compile a new kernel to have this card's support.
You also have to compile the iw tools to configure the card.

Laurent.

1. iMac DV: YDL 2.3 or Mandrake 8.2 best for AirPort?

Hi all,

I'm a Linux newbie, but having witnessed the ease with which Mandrake
9 installed on a PC I'm keen to introduce a PPC version to my iMac DV
(512mb RAM, 1999 vintage).

This machine sports an AirPort card and it would be essential to have
wireless networking under Linux, as my internal modem was fried in an
electrical storm.

Any help or suggestion as to the best distro and/or tweaks to achieve
a working AirPort with a graphite (original) Base Station would be
gratefully received.

And a Happy New Year to one and all!
