7200/90 bootx problems

Post by glenb » Tue, 11 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Hi, I have had a boot problem with bootx and linuxppc2000 on my powerMac
7200/90 ever since I first installed it. When I am in the MacOS, and open
the bootX control panel, and click the "Linux" button, it boots to linux
just fine, but when I reboot out of Linux, and either wait the 8 seconds
or click Linux again in the BootX startup screen, the machine instantly
goes into what would appear to be a sleep state. The machine is on, but
responds to no commands, the monitor goes into a no power mode, and linux
is never given the chance to boot.

If I click MacOS, it will boot into the MacOS successfully, and I can
then, from there, open the BootX control panel, and boot to linux fine, it
just never works on a reboot.

When I first posted this problem on here I was told to try a different
version of BootX, I have now tried all version I coould find, and the
problem exists on all of them. It's a good thing the linux box is so
stable that I never have to reboot, and only do so if I am at the box,
but I would like to be able to reboot it remotely, and know that it will
be fine starting up on it's own.

Any ideas on what I can do to rememdy this would be greatly appreciated.
Is yaboot the answer?

Thanks,

I also have a 7200/90 and have experienced the exact same problem you
have had. I had written earlier and received the same
suggestions that don't work. I have tried new kernels and different
versions of bootX. It did work a long time ago for me
when I still had a MkLinux installation with an earlier linuxppc kernel
and bootX version 1.03 or something like that.
Ever since I put linuxppc 1999 onto my machine (changed partitions and
did an essentially cold install), it has not worked.

By the way, have you ever gotten MOL to work on your 7200?

What about putting an alias to BootX in the Startup Items folder?  When
you reboot, it would come up in MacOS and then tun BootX.

If BootX won't actually start Linux until you hit the <LINUX> button,
you can get a control panel called OK-Dokey that will automatically OK
any dialog box after some set period (eg, 2 minutes).  Alternatively,
you may be aboe to config BootX to do this for you.

Hi all!
Well, what can I say... Using an older BootX extension did the trick for me,
on my 7200/90.
I can only recommend Quik instead of BootX (Don't know how well it
integrates with MacOS, I kicked MacOS a long time ago). It's a * to set
up, but quite nice once it's done. Only problem is that you have to select
boot-options blindfolded on the 7200/90 'cause the OF is so full of bugs
(think I saw a patch for that in the FAQ).
MOL does indeed work on the 7200/90, can't remember the precise molrc
settings though (sorry). If I find 'em, I'll post 'em.

Regards
/Stig

1. MkLinux GENERIC 06 on a 7200/90 problem

Hi all,
I've been running MkLinux DR3 on a 7200/90 for a little while with
relative success. I just reformated and re-installed DR3 from the
CD--everything booted fine. Then I replaced with Mach Kernel, vmlinux, and
System.map with the GENERIC 06 files from globegate. Now the boot process
hangs just after the splash screen in MacOS. It never even gets to the
black screen.
When you choose MkLinux, it waits for a couple minutes on the splash
screen while the mouse is there, but sluggish (this is normal). Then the
mouse suddenly dissappears and nothing else happens.

What gives? Any help?

Thanks,
Jonathan Nolen
