LinuxPPC boots from MacOS but not from BootX

Post by Barry » Fri, 29 Oct 1999 04:00:00

I can get LinuxPPC to boot into the X-based installer if I boot all the
way into MacOS, then double click on the Boot Linux (control panel?)
that the installer put on the desktop. This brings up the same screen as
BootX. I'm assuming that's what it is. I'm booting off the R5 CD-ROM.

BUT, if the normal system boot process stops at BootX, and then I choose
Linux (with the same parameters as before). The screen loses sync and I
can't hear anything happening. Any ideas?

Setup:
* PowerMac 7200/75. 48 MB RAM
* 2 SCSI hard drives. 250 MB for MacOS,  1 GB for linux. About 90 MB for
swap, the rest for root
* 2X Apple CD-ROM. The "term power" jumper is in. I pulled the
termination resistors from the 250 MB drive, which is in the middle. The
drives have both been reformatted with a Apple HD Setup from OS 8.5.
* Nothing on the external SCSI db25 connector.

What boxes are checked in the BootX window?  Is your boot device typed
in correctly?

LinuxPPC boots from MacOS but not from BootX

Post by Mar » Sat, 30 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Hi Barry et al,

I am also having trouble getting linuxppc to boot from the Mac, rather
than the CD.  Not being familiar with unix I would appreciate any
suggestions.  I have a 7220/200 with 80Mb ram and 2Gig linux partition.
It starts booting and stops with a message that
I 'x' is spawning to fast will try again in 5 min.

I have tried reinstalling and changing kernals. Does anyone have another
suggestion?

thanks in advance,

Mark

Have a look at www.linuxppc.com/updates. There is something about
respwaning too fast.

I solve this by hitting several times ctrl-C. Logging in, then edit the
/etc/inittab changing the default entry to 3 iso 5. Then a reboot and I
can start configuring the sys.

This problem and the other X problem seem to be a lack of linux support
for the latest video cards that are turning up on G3 and G4 machines.
I've had exactly the same problem with a G3 machine in that linux cannot
correctly initialise the video card registers but will work OK once MacOS
has set everything up first.

All that can be done is hope for later and better drivers, so far I haven't
found any either...

LinuxPPC boots from MacOS but not from BootX

Post by Mr. Bruce A. Hobso » Sun, 05 Dec 1999 04:00:00

You need to make sure that MacOS is in either 1024x768 or 800x600 in order
for X to work correctly. If you get an error about no available modes then
this is your problem. A better method (although you can see some
interference from the mouse pointer sometimes) is to uncheck the no video
driver option and set video=atyfb:vmode:17 in the kernel arguments. This
removes any requirement to have MacOS configured the same as your X
configuration.

Take a look at http://www.imaclinux.net:8080/content/942527872/index_html

1. I really would like to boot linuxPPC..-using BootX

Yes... I really would. I am using bootX on a powertower prop 225 box, got
the kernel all set up in the system folder, blah blah blah.. Now I am
getting an error that says "no init found, Please pass init arg to kernel"
Now I know lots of this stuff, having installed linux on many intel
based boxes for the last couple of years. I have never run into this trouble
before. I have looked all over the faq-o-matic and the like, and nary a clue
as what this init= arg I need to pass on is.

Please help. I have been sitting on this nice linuxPPC disk for 4 weeks
now and it only serves to frustrate me.

TIA
