Installing R5 over R4 on iMac problems

Post by Aditya Bhasi » Thu, 08 Jul 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I have a Rev. A iMac with 96M RAM.  I had R4 installed on the machine and it
worked great.

During the install (with the X installer), when I click the 'Format and
Close' button, all the windows close and X crashes.  The Redhat installer
doesn't do anything except fatal error and reboots the machine.

Can anyone give me a pointer as to where to even start getting at this?

Thanks,
Aditya

I have a similar problem with a beige G3/300. For me, X does not actually
crash. I can restart the installer, for what its worth. I've had no luck with
the Redhat installer, and choosing the upgrade option. It seems to be looking
to mount my internal disks, which are HFS+. I want to put R5 on an external
disk where presently I have R4. The X installer does recognize that the
external disk is the right spot. Too bad it doesn't work.

By the way, the LinuxPPC promise of 30 days support if you buy the CD-ROM is a
LIE. I never get any response to my email.

I tried to send a reply to this a few days ago, but apparently it didn't
go through.

I had the same problem. Turns out the problem arises when you try to
mount anything but a Linux standard or swap partition (such as when you
are also trying to set up exchange partitions).

Don't set up/mount any of the HFS partitions during install. You can set
them up later on your own. If you just format & mount the Linux
partitions, the install will proceed.

Gassho!

1. R4 to R5 on an iMac

I recently installed LinuxPPC R4 on my iMac. When my CD came, there was a
letter in it saying I would also get an R5 CD for free. I installed R4 onto
my iMac using the instructions on the iMac HOWTO page. I heard R5 will have
full iMac support. When I install R5, will I have to do the steps on the
HOWTO page again or can I just install it? Are there any other special steps
I will need to do? And will R5 let me use 16 (or 32) bit color or sound?
Also, has anybody gotten the modem to work on an iMac in Linux? If so, how?
