cdrecord and SCSI bus problem

Post by Fran?ois Charreir » Thu, 07 Dec 2000 04:00:00

I can't use cdrecord (last version download from www.rpmfind.net (cdreco
rd-1.9-2-ppc.html A command line CD/DVD recording program. Linux/PPC Con
tribs cdrecord-1.9-2-ppc.rpm
).

When  I use cdrecord -scanbus it fails saying that i should try cdrecord
 -scanbus !!!

At boot time the system found cd-rom on bus 0, Id 3 and Lun 0 and a cr-r
om recorder (sorry i don't know the english word for this machine) on bu
s 0, ID 4 and Lun 0.

It looks like I have to recompile the kernel to allow scsi support for C
D-R CD-ROM. I found on the LinuxPPC mailling list page that the kernel 2
2.17-0.6.1 from YDL integrate the SCSI CD-R support. Has someone the sa
me problem than I have, if yes, does the YDL Kernel cure the problem.

Thanks,

I think the kernel needs 'generic SCSI' for cd-record. However, I think
most kernels have it as a default.

Another (and very probable) problem could be the user permissions. Either
make sure you are using cdrecord as root, or (better) do'chmod +s
/usr/bin/cdrecord'.

Once this is settled, I suggest you take a look at gCombust :
(<http://www.abo.fi/~jmunsin/gcombust/>), which is a graphical frontend for
cdrecord/mkisofs, etc. I have only tried it on Linux-386, but it should work
under linux/ppc too. Very friendly and much easier to use than directly
cdrecord (it won't get you around your current problems, though).
