Portable Stylewriter on LPPC2000

The printer I use is a Portable Stylewriter, it's old, but it has a
battery (which is way cool) I'd like to be able to print to it but
every time I try to do it it just prints a page of garbled *or goes
nuts and beeps. Anyone have any quick tips to get this working?

1. LPPC2000: Can't create new user

I have just installed LPCC2K on a beige G3. The install went smoothly
and I can boot into Linux as root. I have created a new user using
ADDUSER and then gave that account a password with PASSWD. When I try to
logout and then back in as the new user, I get authentication failed.

Why?
