HELP!!! won't boot after adding RAM

Post by Kevin O'Donova » Tue, 18 May 1999 04:00:00

I have LinuxPPC 4.1 installed on a 266Mhz iMac which up to today had 32MB of
RAM installed.  However, this morning I installed a 128MB RAM card so it now
has 160MB RAM (uh uh uh  ;]  ), with one 32MB card and one 128MB card.

Anyway, I can't boot Linux anymore apart from clicking the 'no video driver'
checkbox and typing 'single' into the parameter box in the BootX app.

Being relatively new to Unix admin. I don't know why, I can only guess that
Linux won't tolerate two different size cards installed??  Mac OS 8.5.1 is
running fine, absolutely no problems with that so I don't think I've damaged
the machine in any way when installing the new RAM.

Any & all suggestions on how to narrow down the problem in the bash
prompt/otherwise, or info on what the problem is would be VERY welcome!

thanx in advance,
Kevin.

HELP!!! won't boot after adding RAM

Ok, scratch that, I turned off Virtual Memory in the Mac OS and it works
fine.

This strikes me that LinuxPPC and the MacOS aren't quite so independent as I
had thought - why is LinuxPPC taking any notice of what the memory settings
of the MacOS are??

Kevin.

Well, they are independant. The thing is, you use a MacOS application
to boot Linux. So all in all, it's BootX which has special memory
needs (contiguous, fixed, or something like that) which baffles your
MacOS.

1. Help: Won't boot, NO RAM BASIC

I once had a problem like this but it had nothing to do with LINUX.
I was re-installing win95 on a system.  I used FDISK to divide the
hard drive into two partitions, then I did a format /s on the C:
partition to format it and transfer the system.

During all this, I had forgotten to make the partition "active" (I think
that's what it's called in FDISK) and I got the ROM BASIC error you mention
above.  I went back into FDISK and sure enough, it says "you have to make
the partition active before it is bootable".  I did this and it fixed
the problem.

Were you re-partitioning your disk to make room for LINUX?  Maybe you
made this same mistake...
