Can anyone suggest a good book that would explain/outline how to configure
Linux.  I will use either LinuxPPC or MkLinux, is there any major
differences?  I am new to Linux and need the bible that explains such
things as:

   - networking setup
   - video configuration (resolution,color depth)
   - or anything you can think of!!!!

Thanks for spending the time to answer my questions!!!

Here is what I use: "Running Linux", O'Reilly Press, this news group, and
every FAQ I can find.  LinuxPPC and MkLinux, I am using MkLinux, but might
try LinuxPPC when 5 comes out, I don't think you can go wrong with either.
Try both. The MkLinux book, "MkLinux Microkernel Linux for the Power
Macintosh", was what I first learned on.  It is good for getting you started,
But this group will be your best friend, take that from a befuddled newbie..
Read the archives too. Don't be afraid to*it up, you will, no biggie,
just reinstall if you can't fix it.

past posts about partitioning and pdisk. It's not as hard as it seems.

At the moment all the linux books out there are specific to Linux on the
Intel platform. For the most part that's OK, but when it comes to video
and X setup on the PPC's you will find nothing in most of the books. The
problem is that the current verison of LinuxPPC does not use Xfree86. The
books all cover Xfree86 and are of no help when it comes to settig up
LinuxPPC

Rev5 includes Xfree86. (I can't wait to get my Wacom tablet woring under
linux!!) At that time the sections in the books covering video will be
usefull.

Other then video the books are OK. I got Using Linux (the latest revision)
and O'Reilys Linux in a Nutshell. They have been of great use.

Does anyone else use "Running Linux?"  I almost bought it yesterday, but I
decided not to because it was last updated in '96.  Is it still worth having?
Are there better books out there for a novice Linux user?

I'll add the few I've used:

Unix QuickStart Guide (Peachpit): My favorite book series. I always like
to start with something real simple. This does it. Designed for people
using unix shell accounts, it still has helped this newbie a lot with
linux. They're supposed to have a linux book coming out soon.

Teach Yourself Linux in 24 Hours (Sams): Not terribly well designed, but
still a good newbie book for introducing tricks and advice you might not
have known to look for.

Linux in Plain English (MIS): A command reference. Room for improvement,
but still very handy.

Still on the lookout for something better...

My two cents. I tried the LinuxPPC live demo, via the Macworld CDRom, and was
clueless as to how to get a ppp connection going.

I picked-up "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Linux", because it focuses on
using KDE, and how to set-up Linux (even though it is written for/includes
CDRom of Caldera's Openlinux).
