Has anybody tried to compile GIMP on a PPC?

Post by George Grave » Tue, 23 Sep 1997 04:00:00

Has anyone had any luck getting GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) to

successfully compile and install on a Mac running MKLinux?

http://www.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/~gimp/

Distribution is 'gimp-0.99.pre11-3.5.tar.gz'

Gimp is a high-end Photoshop-like program that's supposed to be
dynamite I can get configure to work but 'make and 'make install'
give me error 1 and error 2 messages and fail.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

There is a precompiled version on ftp.linuxppc.org. It is a 0.992.b or something. Not very
usefull, as a lot of things like drawing a line are missing...
I was ableto compile a newer version but is wasn't stable at all. Just yesterday I tried to
compile the newest version (Sept. 23) and it compiled, but gave me an error on startup.

So either some one is able to make necessary patches or were're stuck with the precompiled
version...

Yeah, I tried the precompiled version. When I try to install it using
"rpm -i" I get a long list of support files that are 'missing', and
nothing gets installed. I want this program and am getting very
frustrated by my inability to get any version of it I've tried to
either install or run.

BTW, does anybody know of a good WORD PROCESSOR (not text editor)
for MKLinux? preferably free, preferably a PPC  RPM distribution.

Thanks

George

Make sure you have rpm-2.4.  It's available somewhere on ftp.linuxppc.org
(or else cap.anu.edu.au?).  Also, try:

rpm -i --nodeps <filename>

If that doesn't work, add the --force option.

Gad to see you're trying linux, George!

Try linux-pmac, first of all!!

Yes, it compiled for me - GIMP version 0.99.10, though. (According
to gimp --version)

Check out ftp.linuxppc.org/RedHat/RPMS  - I think they have
a precompiled version there.

If you are compiling yourself, make sure you have all the
appropriate libraries.

I have tried to compile the latest gimp - 0.99.11 - and it compiled on
linux-pmac with no errors. When I installed it and tried to
run it though, it gave an illegal instruction error and dumped
the core.

Apparently it is a bug in the gimp. There is supposed to be a
new version released in the next two days. Hopefully this will
fix whatever it was.

: Try asking the StarOffice guys nicely?  Or ask RedHat for an Applix
: port.  Your best bet is probably to get LyX or some other freeware
: project, though.

applixware would be awesome, agreed, but if yo ucan, get the jdk1.1.3 and
you can use applix anyware or corel office for java. (i haven't had luckl
with the jdk on mklinux 2.1u4 even with the updated vmlinux server and
mach kernel, and am moving to linuxpmac). see www.applix.com for more
info on the applix anyware office suite (like applixware lite i guess).
payware.

Get the missing stuff first, or try --nodeps.  Caveat, though.

1. Trying to compile gtkwave on Solaris 7 box, with GCC 2.95, having no luck.

I am relatively new to Solaris. I am trying to compile a tool called
gtkwave-1.3 on a solaris 7 box. I am much more used to Linux and BSD.

Anyways, the place where it dies is linking some helper command line
applications which require zlib.  There were zlib libraries (static
libz.a and libz.so) already on the machine, but the libz.so needed
a dynamic libc.  So I got this error:

ld: warning: file libgcc_s.so.1: required by /usr/lib/libz.so, not found

I figured it was because the /usr/lib/libz.so needed libgcc_s.so (yes I
can read an error message).  So I searched the whole filesystem and
there is no such file as "libgcc_s.so" or anything close.

So I thought, now I really am confused.

So I then tried to force link with libz.a instead of libz.so, first by
renaming libz.so (yes, this was bad, but if the system has no
libgcc_s.so, any app trying to load libz.so would fail anyways), then
relinking. No luck.

So then I figured both libz.a and libz.so must be screwed, so I decided
to rebuild them from sources. So I did a download of the zlib binaries
from www.sunfreeware.com, and those didn't work, so I did a build from
zlib sources (configure, make test, make install).  Now I have libz.a in
/usr/lib, but attempts to compile a program that uses libz.a ( gcc
option -lz) dies with this error:

bash#gcc -O2 -lz -o mvl2lxt mvl2lxt.c lxt_write.c

Undefined                       first referenced
  symbol                             in file
gzdopen                             /var/tmp/cco1OmHW.o
gzwrite                             /var/tmp/cco1OmHW.o
gzclose                             /var/tmp/cco1OmHW.o

Why is this happening? I have a valid libz.a in /usr/lib/libz.a

What am I doing wrong? Besides being a clueless Solaris Newbie. Help!
