Probably the easiest way to change your Linux resolution is to use BootX
and check no video driver. This will allow Linux to use the whatever
setting your Mac is using at the time. You will have to boot back to
MacOS to change resolution, but it is the quick and easy way to go.

I change the resolution X boots into with ( if I remember correctly) my home
.xserverrc file. Just add the line : "vmode 17 32",
for example, where 17 is the resolution/frequency and 32 is the bit depth.
Theres a man page for vmode, so you can check that. I'm pretty sure it was
in .xserverrc, I can't double-check now, sorry.

1. LinuxPPC and Matrox card?

-I know LinuxPPC does not support many 3rd party PCI cards, however, I
thought this only applied to X server support.  I have a Matrox
MillenniumII, it works with MacOS and BeOS, but if I want to use Linux I
have to shutdown my system and switch the monitor to the slow internal
video.  I thought that at least the counsel would work, it doesn't (set
OF to /bandit/MATROX,Mistral).
-Then I remembered that MkLinux boots after the card has been "seen" by
MacOS, so I installed MkLinux, but nothing happens.
-Then I thought, I could just recompile the source to an X86 Matrox
server and boot the machine so XDM pops up.  I have not been able to
find a source distribution of the Matrox Server, and even if I do, I
doubt it will work.
-Is there anyway around this that will at least give me counsel
support?  I do not want to have to go back to internal video!
