I followed the instructions at:

http://people.a2000.nl/omoerbe/

It worked for me (after I did EVERYTHING)...

1. LinuxPPC 2000 doesn't like 3-button "Trust AMI mouse USB"

Using LinuxPPC 2000 "out of the box" (2.2.15pre3 -- although I've tried
later kernels too), I see severe indigestion logged when I connect my
cheapo 3-button "Trust AMI mouse USB":

May 24 15:47:57 daventry kernel: hub: port 3 connection change
May 24 15:47:57 daventry kernel: usbcore: USB disconnect on device 3
May 24 15:47:57 daventry kernel: usb-ohci: Releasing irq handle c07a6220
May 24 15:47:57 daventry kernel: USB Mouse disconnected
May 24 15:47:57 daventry kernel: hub: port 3 enable change
May 24 15:47:58 daventry kernel: hub: port 3 connection change
May 24 15:47:58 daventry kernel: USB new device connect, assigned device
number 3
May 24 15:47:58 daventry kernel: usb: skipped 1 class/vendor specific
interface descriptors
May 24 15:47:58 daventry kernel: Manufacturer:
May 24 15:47:58 daventry kernel: Product:
May 24 15:47:58 daventry kernel: USB mouse found
May 24 15:47:58 daventry kernel: hub: port 3 reset change

lots of times.  (Same whether it's connected via the keyboard hub,
another hub, or directly.)  Performance is laggy to say the least, and
the system's inclined to crash.

The mouse works fine with Mac OS (can see what it is, who made it, see
all the buttons, whatever).  Any ideas what to hack to make things
right?  (I have not yet tried a later XFree86, BTW.)

Thanks.
