ethernet: linuxppc to linux (pc)

ethernet: linuxppc to linux (pc)

Does anyone know of any general problems connecting linuxppc
to a pc running linux? I have a very frustrating situation:

ethernet works between both of the following

mac <-> windows
linuxppc <->  windows

(both directions in each case)

but it refuses to work when both are booted into linux.
the commands I use (which work for linuxppc<->windows) are:

ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0

that's from the linuxppc side; from the pc it's the same except
I use 192.168.1.2 for the ip address. Again, all this works except
when both machines are running linux.
I generally get a "no route to host" message.

I have: built in ethernet on a 7300, running linuxppc with latest
2.1.24 kernel.

pc is: ethernet card (3com), correct driver installed, redhat
linux 5.0 with 2.0.31 and 2.0.32 kernels tried.

For what it's worth, I've also tried setting things up with
control-panel under X, as well as editing the files in
/etc/sysconfig/* -- no luck.

Any help is appreciated.
