Post by max barwel » Sun, 12 Aug 2001 22:09:50

I am installing ydl 2.0 for a friend on his black g3 powerbook, i am
experienced with linux on x86, but know nothing of macs.
the ydl site says a newworld rom can boot off the ydl cd by holding 'c'
as the computer boots but this dosent work. It says some g3 powerbooks
are newworld, how can i tell or am i doing something else wrong. I only
want linux on it not dual boot if i can help it.

The first newworld G3 powerbook was the one with SCSI and a bronze color
keyboard (translucent keys, nickname Lombard). The Firewire powerbook
(Pismo) was the other black newworld model.

If your machine has a 'MacOS ROM' file in the system folder it's
newworld.

The address you requested:

http://linuxppc.org/hardware/apple/index.php3?css_ok=1

However if you want to boot from a CD you need to press the "C" key
before booting and maintain it during the boot time.

New World Macs have built in USB.

Hold down the option key, if a list of bootable drives appears, you have
a new world. Old world machines can't do this.
