bootx 'video=atyfb' == Big Problem

Post by em » Sat, 24 Jul 1999 04:00:00

-problem with 'video = atyfb'
-screen comes up with video pattern that looks like corduroy
-machine:    8600/300 160mb ram
-PCI video : ATI Xclaim 3D plus /8mb vram

when i try to boot with video=atyfb,(with the video driver box UNchecked)
i get just garbled patterns
on the screen. this happens at every vmode, & cmode options
i have tried. normally i try (video=atyfb:vmode:17,cmode:32)

also: Xconfigurator tells me that my aty, xclaim only has
5mb of vram, when it has 8mb ....

all i can say is...
help!..(please)

If you're using the stock kernel, try to get a kernel patched for video=
atyfb... Check on the mailing list archive, I'm sure somebody has done it.

actually i am running a 2.2.10 pmac kernel that i built from
source.. with an edit to the /drivers/video/Config,in file to
enable ATI support,(see earlier thread : "kernel:compile problem.
Cant add ATI Mach64 support" 22 Jul 99)i am thinking that i
should have y'd or m'd, when i n'd, or n'd when i y'd...
I still have low milege when it comes to rolling kernels....

does the "LinuxPPC Standard" kernel (2.2.6?) have
ati (atyfb) built in..?.. cause i get the same cordury video,
with that one.

Try another kernel then. One that works for sure (grab one compiled for
the Powerbooks w/ ATI support). You can get it from http://gdr.free.fr/

thanks much for the info... :)
i tried your idea but got the same vertical grey lines and
nothing else, (if getting even that !) then the kernel seems to die....

so....

i compiled 2.2.10-pmac (paulus), it asked if i wanted ATI Mach64 support,
i said yes, so i assume i have ATI support but the kernel will only boot
if i use the OFfb video (i.e checked 'no video driver')
it works fine except, when i tell bootx to use atyfb for video...

machine: 8600/300 w/ ati xclaim 3d plus pci card w/ 19" monitor

1. 'less','more' turn xterm inverse video

Hi... Hope this is the right spot for this.  When using either less
or more, the second page turns inverse video in an xterm.  I have
tried everything I can think of, but still no luck.  I have gotten
it so just one line turns inverse - the line that 'more' was on, but
it is still very bothersome.  Is there a minimal termcap entry or
someting that I could try for the xterm?  Where can I go about
checking for this?

Thanks,
Dave Wreski
