Second Frame buffer device, XFree Multihead - Possible?

Second Frame buffer device, XFree Multihead - Possible?

Hi.

Here's a question.  Is it possible to get a multihead display under
Xfree86 as distributed with R5/1999?

I have the following setup.  Beige G3/233 Rev A, onboard ATI Rage II
with 6MB VRAM, ATI XClaim GA with 2MB VRAM.  The onboard video  works
fine - 24Bit X, accelerated (with a few glitches, but nothing that
makes it unusable) at 1280x1024.  I can get fbset to fire up the
second card at 1280x1024 (as long as I boot with atyfb video at 16 bit
depth (I run my consoles at 1024x768).  32bit depth reports the second
card (at boot time), but the kernel refuses to initialise it as it
hasn't enough memory to fire up at 32bit.  Which seems fair enough.

Now.  I can stick in a second set of monitor, device and screen
sections in my XF86Config file, and even get X to start on the
second card if I only use those settings and tell X to use /dev/fb1,
but I've been unable to get X to start up with both screen sections
enabled.

Any ideas?  Is there a parameter that I must pass to X to tell it
to use both fb devices?  Is it even possible to do with Xfree 3.3.x?
Has anyone done this yet?

Simon

Also, does anyone have a spare XClaimGA 2MB expansion module they'd
be willing to sell me?  Or know where to get one?

Last time I visited the Xfree86 page, it said:
multiheaded not until version 4.
You may want to check that out (something like www.xfree86.org)

1. Frame buffer driver crashes in XFree 3.3.6

Hello all.

I have a problem with the 16 bit frame buffer display driver cfb16 in XFree
3.3.6. It crashes at the start of the xfce window manager xfwm with a signal
11.

The crash dump is given to the text screen, but no core file is found
anywhere of either the cfb16 or xfwm.

Other desktops run without a hitch - normally KDE is in use.

Any ideas?
