Floppy: /dev/fd0: Device or resource busy

Post by Didier Guillevi » Wed, 03 Nov 1999 04:00:00

Hi,

I cannot say I am being very successful at reading my floppies.  I have
a PowerPC 8500/150, with LinuxPPC R5, and the 2.2.12 kernel.  When I try
to access a dos floppy, I get the following response:

Quote:> mdir a:

Can't open /dev/fd0:  Device or resource busy
Cannot initialize 'A:'

A while back, I might have ooppss-deleted the floppy entry in
/etc/fstab.  I re-typed that entry as below (correct entry?):

/dev/fd0   /mnt/floppy  ext2  owner,noauto  0 0

Thanks for your time and any input,

Didier

I think you are getting the error because the OS is trying to mount an
ext2 floppy , not a dos one. If you change the ext2 to auto and try
again it should work.  You will have to have the autofs rpm installed.

mtools doesn't mount your floppy. The /etc/fstab doesn't do thing with mtools.
Check instead /etc/mtools.conf but I guess in this case this still doesn't help
much since a: is defaulted to /dev/fd0.

You are right, mtools has nothing to do with the fstab, but
if the partition type is not correctly defined in the fstab then it won't
work.
the /etc/fstab should be:
#oldline
#/dev/fd0  /mnt/floppy  ext2  owner,noauto  0 0
/dev/fd0  /mnt/floppy  auto  owner,noauto  0 0

This should make mount check and mount the volume as the correct type.
once the floppy is mounted, mtools should work.
I can't check cause my G4 doesn't have a floppy either.
HTH and please post and let us know how it worked

1. /dev/ttyS2 (/dev/cua2) reports "device or resource busy" on kernel 2.1.95

I have just upgraded my kernel from 2.1.77 to 2.1.95

I use isapnp tools to set the IRQ and I/O address of my modem, then
setserial
to tell the driver that /dev/ttyS2 is where it is.

This worked fine on 2.1.77 kernel but now I get the message that the
"device or resource busy", when I attempt to open it (with say, dip
or kermit). Nothing else is using the port.

What has changed between these two kernel releases that would cause
this?

(also tried /dev/cua2 (which is being 'deprecated') to the same
effect...
works on 2.1.77 and is busy on 2.1.95)

(remove the '__' before the address when replying please)
