Hi Oliver,

Good news! You can use any of the IBM Travelstar GN 40 models (up to 40
GB) http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/travel/tr40gn.htm

Or another labtop harddisk with no more than 9,5 mm of height.

I don't know of any howto, but it shouldn't be too difficult, I hope
(and hear), because I have just bought one myself!

Have fun (and space)
Tadeusz

I have done this a couple of times, and it is NOT easy and very likely
to leave you with a non-functioning iBook.

Unless you are VERY sure of yourself and willing to take the loss, I
would just take the lot to an Apple Service Provider and get them to do
do it. It should only cost about $60.

This is not an easy drive swap like the other laptops are.

Hi Oliver,
yes, there is a tremendously detailed advice: www.caslis.com See the
iBook section.
Nevertheless its a hard work and you will have to dismount your iBook
nearly completely. You better know how to work with a*driver and
how to deal with electronics. But its worth the gallons of sweat you
will lose. I' ve done it myself with my blueberry and gained a lot of speed.
All you need is a 9,5 mm (hight) hard drive (most 4200 rpm ibm or
toshiba or fujitsu drives fit well) I dont recommend IBM drives because
they are too noisy. One of the main advantages of the iBook (no fan and
thus very calm) is gone with an ibm drive.
One more advice from me: buy some soft pads to glue on the harddrive
mount of your iBook. The mount in its original state conducts the
vibrations of the hard drive to the chassis. If you manage to damp the
vibrations with soft pads your iBook will be very calm.
And keep attention not to knit the white foil that lies underneath the
transparent cover when you open the iBook. Use soft material (a peace of
plastic or wood not a*driver) to get the cover out of the bottom
chasis.
Good luck. I wish I still had my iBook. But because I needed a bigger
screen I bought a TiBook some months ago.

One more thing:
buy a really big hard drive. You won't want to do this work twice!

Well, should be possible. I don't know it for sure, but it was possible in
my older PowerBook 1400 which now is working with a 6GB IBM-HDD

What you need is a 2.5" Notebook - Harddisk. You usually can buy them either
at your local dealer or somewhere online.

Greetings
Martin

PS: Where are you from? I mean, an english talking guy in a german Newsgroup
isn't really common
