PBG3 'Wallstreet' 300Mhz and R5/R4

PBG3 'Wallstreet' 300Mhz and R5/R4

Post by Henrik Otterstr? » Thu, 11 Feb 1999 04:00:00

In a few weeks I'm gettin' my hands on this beauty and would love to install
LinuxPPC. I previosly tried installing Linux on a G3/300 MT (on an external
SCSI HD - not the U/W's it shipped with) and I found it painfully slow
(especially with X).

This is compared to a off-the-shelf windoze-box. Am I too naive as to
believe the PowerPC should beat the pants of the AMD-K6?

Is this simply the state of Linux for PPC? Or am I doing something wrong?

Any pointers or suggestions appreciated,

Regards,
Henrik.

OK - thanks for your suggestions / explanations. I'll try just that.

Can't wait for R5 to arrive... Ah, well, patience is character bulding,
right?

Henrik.

1. R5 on french PBG3 WallStreet and desktop OK

Hi, everybody

I see that many people are not so happy with R5...

I've been lucky : I went through 2 installs onto 2 different Mac G3 ! A
PowerBook G3 Series and a G3 266 Desktop, even with the french keyboard
configuration. (French users will find the necessary files and how-to on
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/christophe.lecerf/LinuxPPC-FR.html).

But I'm not happy... I found glint buggy and unable to work. It looks
like python is looking for some files in a place they're not. I tried to
go back to glint-2.4.... doesn't work either.

Does anyone have such an experience ? And solutions ?

Christophe
