X colors wrong -- Yellow Dog 2.1 / TiBook

Post by Jonathan Singe » Sat, 12 Jan 2002 09:46:18

I've installed Yellow Dog Linux on a G4 Powerbook 550 MHz. I've got most
things working (I'm posting from it right now) but the X configuration is
wrong. I selected the Titanium monitor option in the install but X crashed.
Same after running Xautoconfig4, according to a suggestion on the YDL site.

800x600 at 16 bits starts, but the colors are all wrong. I've tried adding
yaboot.conf options other Usenet posts suggested, with no difference. Does
anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!!!

I do not know about YDL. On mandrake and TiBook, I had to edit my
/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and change the bottom of the file. I replace on
the "Screen Section" all 1O24 by 1152.

By the way I first replace my file by one that was available for the
TiBook on the net. But it crashed my machine. I would advice you to
make change yourself on your local file instead of dumping a foreign
one.

Here is the bottom of mine if it can help you.

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "screen1"
    Device      "ATI Rage 128 Mobility"
    Monitor     "Apple|iMac/PowerBook 1024x768"
    DefaultColorDepth 24
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth       8
        Modes       "1152x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort    0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth       15
        Modes       "1152x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort    0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth       16
        Modes       "1152x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort    0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth       24
        Modes       "1152x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort    0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth       32
        Modes       "1152x768" "800x600" "640x480"
        ViewPort    0 0
    EndSubsection
EndSection

OK, it works, and looks great! The keys for me were:
1) A precompiled benh 2.4.18-pre3 kernel
2) XFree86 4.2 form CVS
3) Using "radeon" as the driver

Thanks to everyone who helped, and especially the guys who support new
hardware so quickly!
