Stupid Newbie trick: Missing patch binary

Stupid Newbie trick: Missing patch binary

Post by Mark Sha » Fri, 25 Feb 2000 04:00:00

Hello Linux Gurus,

I just start dabbling with LinuxPPC (1999 Q3) and have run into the first
problem for which I cannot find the solution on the web.

I installed Linux on a G4/400 Yikes! following Robert Shaw's excellent "B&W
G3" instructions on linuxppc.org.  Last night I upgraded my kernel from
2.2.6 to 2.2.10, again following Robert Shaw's instructions.  My problem is
that when I get to the part where I have to apply XF86Config.patch and
xkb-macintosh.patch to configure the keyboard, I get a bash error that
command patch is not recognized.  I installed all of the base packages (I
think) and most of the rest of the packages that came with the full install.

Patch is just a binary, right?  What package should have installed it? Can I
install it somehow now as a single file or by installing one of the packages
with RPM?

TIA,

Mark Shaw

You mean like:

The OP said he has Q3.  If that's the case, just mount the cd and look
in software/devel, I believe.  If it's not there, try 'find software
-iname patch*'.

Yeah.  I mean just *exactly* like that. :) Thanks for the quick and helpful
response.  I had never heard of rpmfind.net.  Seems like a good place to
know about.

Let's see.... that was about a 90 minute response time.  What was that again
that everyone said was the disadvantage of "free" software compared to
Micro$oft?  Something about availability of support or something. :)

Lovin' the Linux experience!

Mark

And, it was more than "reboot, reformat, reinstall", too... :)
