UMAX C500/180...Anyone Try This?

Post by Henry Gi » Sat, 23 Dec 2000 11:53:39

Hi All,
Newbie as far as Linux goes.

Am trying to decide what is the best distro for my UMAX.  It seems that YDog
says it should work.  Anyone have Linux on a 603e/180 and how was
performance?  I am looking only to setup an FTP, HTTP and some servlet or
JSP for hacking around.

I also have a VPower G3/240.  Works well and I was hoping to use it with
Linux.  This accelerator works by starting up in the Mac OS the initiates a
warm boot to the accelerator that sits in the cache slot.  Its a long shot
but has anyone even tried to use one of these types of accelerators?

Thanks...Henry

I am using a C500 200 mhz. LinuxPPC seems to run a little faster than
MacOS 8.6... at least to me.

Running linuxppc 2000 on a c600 240. Runs well.

I'm a poor person and only have the original 56 Mb of memory and 1 Gb partition
(incl swap) so it's a little bloated and a little slow. I found Gnome to be slow,
so I'm using some smaller tools in the window management department.
(WindowMaker, I think)

Still haven't figure out how to apply the 603 patch to the kernel for Mac on
Linux, but I'm looking at recompiling the kernel to adjust for my smaller, older
setup. Any advice in this respect would be appreciated.

You should be able to do some searches on deja. As far as Ive read, most
cards work if the extension is loaded BEFORE BootX or after MacOS has
booted and you use the BootX app.
