installing Linux on a Motorola PPC-mainboard MTX604

Post by Dr. Peer-Joachim Koc » Wed, 16 Jun 1999 04:00:00

Hello,

we want to install LINUX on a dual proc. mainboard from motorola.
We have currently only the mainboard (with ethernet and SCSI on board),
memory, an a floppy.
1) How can we boot from a floppy ? The system always looks for
the system at /harddisk 0,0 , but we have only a unformatted hd.
Must I use "gevboot" ?

2) What kernal image to i have to use (I never tried RedHat) ?

Please send answers also as e-mail.

Thanks, Peer

Hi,

: we want to install LINUX on a dual proc. mainboard from motorola.

Should be a MTX board, right ?

: We have currently only the mainboard (with ethernet and SCSI on board),
: memory, an a floppy.
: 1) How can we boot from a floppy ? The system always looks for
: the system at /harddisk 0,0 , but we have only a unformatted hd.
: Must I use "gevboot" ?

Do you have OpenFirmware (ok prompt) or PPCBUG ?

PPCBUG:
pboot 1

Open Firmware:
boot floppy

: 2) What kernal image to i have to use (I never tried RedHat) ?

The PReP-Image. The problem with that image is that its size is bigger
than 1.44 MB so it won't fit on one floppy. I'm working on a solution.
Note that the SMP support is not in the standard kernel, but there
is a patch for 2.2.3 which isn't 100% stable as far as I read. You will
also need a patch for kernel 2.2.9, it was posted on the developers
mailing list a week or so ago.

regards,

1. Linux f.Motorola board MTX604

Hi!

Is there anybody, who can say or had tried by himself, which Linux would
run on the new board of Motorola with the PPC 604e 300MHz(MTX604-010)
? Or how I had to adapt a Linux/PPC that it runs on this boards?
You find a description of this board under
