trying to get networking to work on my new linuxppc install
Can't ping "penguin", my PC; network OK using MacOS

ifconfig shows:

eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:00:C5:47:AA:8D
          inet addr:24.5.200.56  Bcast:24.5.200.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
          EtherTalk Phase 2 addr:65280/20
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:4 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:32 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

ifup eth0
fails, saying

SIOCADDRT: File exists
SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable
linuxconf: error in loading shared libraries: libgd.so.1: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory
linuxconf: error in loading shared libraries: libgd.so.1: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

nbplkup finds PC & printer OK:

                     macpenguin:AFPServer
65280.110:128
                     macpenguin:netatalk
65280.110:4
                     macpenguin:Workstation
65280.110:4
                        penguin:AFPServer
65280.59:128
                        penguin:netatalk
65280.59:4
                        penguin:Workstation
65280.59:4
           LaserWriter 4/600 PS:LaserWriter
65428.56:128

Incidentally, the missing libgd.so.1 is nowhere to be found on ftp site
or my linuxppc CD distr.

Suggestions?
