PowerMac 8600 and LinuxPPC 1999 no audio...

Thats the scoop.
I have tried /dev/dsp  and /dev/audio and any other kind of audio driver,
but no sound....

Is there an OSS Sound module?

I assume the LinuxPPC 2000 will work......

Be sure to run xmixer (or some other OSS mixer app) and make sure your
output volumes aren't set to zero.

(Off-topic rant: xmixer is my poster child for "stupid GUI design".
Just because you've drawn an icon, does not mean you have created a
user-friendly interface.)

Yes. I don't remember LinuxPPC 1999 *lacking* sound, before I upgraded
to 2000, but it's been a while.

1. Installing LinuxPPC 1999 Q3 on 8600/200

I have followed the instructions on how to d/l and install LinuxPPC 1999Q3
on a 8600/200 and everything goes good unil it is time to boot up for the
first time after finishing the install.

The 8600 boots into BootX where I set the Root device to /dev/sda5, (sda5 is
root, sda6 is swap, and sda7 is macos), uncheck 'Use RAM Disk' and clear the
'More kernel arguments:' line.  I click on 'Linux' then it does it's stuff.
It gets to a point where it says:

Warning: unable to open an initial console.
Kernel panic: no init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.

Then after 180 seconds it reboots.

Any ideas on what I can do to get past this?
