Install error on G3: "error unpacking archive: unknown error"

Post by George Entenm » Mon, 22 Mar 1999 04:00:00

I am trying to install the LinuxPPC Release 4.1 CD on my Mac G3/233
desktop; this is one of the first models; it has 96MB RAM.  It has
built-in SCSI, and I have attached an external SCSI drive, where I'm
trying to install LinuxPPC.

I have successfully partitioned the drive, and I have gotten the installer
to run.  It asks me about the partitions, so it sees the drive ok. The
problem is that after specifying the packages to install, it emits the
error message:

   error unpacking archive: unknown error

and dies.  I have tried this several times and several ways.

The only reference to this error message that I could find in the archives

has something to do with not having a regular 50 pin SCSI drive.  But this
is precisely what I have, so I think that this problem has some other
cause.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on here?

Does anyone know *what* archive the message is talking about?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
George Entenman

P.S. FYI, here is Richard Nagle's question:

Ok.  I'm a bit red-faced about this one: I had partitioned the disk into
partitions that were far too small for the installer to write on them.

Now, after repartitioning, the installer ran.  But now whenever I try to
start linux, I get the installer window again.  Anyone know why?

There is a message about not being able to read the partition table, but
it *was* able to install, so I'm confused.

But, hey, this is only the third day of trying!

Uncheck "use ramdisk" in BootX.

1. tinyX gives "xinit: Unknown error (errno 0): Client error." error and dies

I am trying to set up tinyX on a system I have at home. The system is
a 386SX/16 with 8 megs of RAM, 12 megs of swap space, and around 160
megs of hard drive space. It has a generic 256K video card and a Dell
13 inch monitor. (Not much of a system, I know, but I got it for
free). When I try to start up tinyX, the X server starts up (I see the
dithered background with the X cursor), and then it dies. Below is the
output it produces on the console as it is starting and dying:

Script started on Sun Oct  1 14:31:24 1995

waiting for X server to shut down

xinit:  Unknown error (errno 0):  Client error.
dogbert:/usr/X386#

Does anyone have any idea what is causing it to die like this?
Suggestions are greatly appreciated. Obviously it would be better if I
were running on a faster machine, but I can't afford to upgrade just
yet, so if anyone can suggest how to get this working in the meantime,
I would be most grateful.

TIA,

/Matthew
