newbie PBG3 problem, Help ?

Post by Axel Poign » Wed, 23 Jun 1999 04:00:00

I have installed R5 successfully on a PowerBook G3 (300Mhz). I used the
ftp-version. There have been two propblems while running the redhat installer:
1. It  looked for XautoConf which did not exist (in fact XautoConfig
did, hence changing "comps" accordingly seemed to work fine)
2. Running the Xconfiguration at the end of installation did not work
properly (I thinkl other people reported on this).

In terms of specific choices, I just ticked the C/C++ development stuff.

Now, booting the system I get the message

'According to /var/run/gdm.pid, gdm was already running ..., but seems
to have been *ed mysteriously.'

This keeps on flickering for some time, then it says:

'INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes'

this iterates. I have tried several installations with all kinds of
minor modofications but the effect is always the same.

Axel,

I've ran into similar problems. I think most people with G3 series
powerbooks have. I fixed the problem on my end before a fix was
released, but if you visit http://www.veryComputer.com/, you will find
there are many patches/fixes posted.

One of the fixes is for the problem you're encountering. You need the
new installer.

Take care,

1. Need Help With X Window Auto Launch on PBG3/300 (R5)

Hello All-

I installed (R5) KDE and not GNOME on the above machine.  The
/etc/X11/prefmd file looks for gnome shared libs at start up . Of
course, as I did not install GNOME, there are no gnome libs for it to
find, and the computer tells me as much ("no file or directory...").
So I get the "processes respawning too fast" and am left at the command
line prompt. Every several minutes, the system will try again, in vain,
to start X and GNOME with the same results.

How do I edit the prefdm file to link to the proper KDE libs, etc.?

Thanks,
Ed O'Briant

P.S. X Window and KDE work fine (manuel "startx").  I would love to
clean up this mess at boot, though!
