Yaboot config for iBook

Yaboot config for iBook

Post by Ryan Bayn » Thu, 23 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I'll admit to being a total newbie in terms of installing my own copy of
Linux, but I can't seem to find an answer for this.  I'm using yaboot 1.5
to boot into a LinuxPPC 2000 install, but I can't get anything better than
8 bit colour to work.  If I use BootX, and force it to use MacOS video
settings, everything works fine.  However, I can't figure out a valid
config for yaboot that doesn't restrict me to 8 bit video.  Has anyone
successfully gotten an iBook to boot with Yaboot into something greater
than 8 bit colour?  Thank you.

why use Yaboot? BootX seems to be much more convenient and less cryptic...
(not being critical, mind you, just curious)...

btw, how is LinuxPPC 2000 on the ibook compared to Yellow Dog Linux?

Use BootX - it looks much better and is more convenient.
LinuxPPC on an iBook is superb - only sound and APM managment are missing yet.

Apart from that it rocks at 589 bogoMIPS!

1. problem with yaboot/ybin on iBook

Dear all,
I have two problems with  yaboot/ybin on an iBook where I installed Debian
2.2r3, Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X in separate disk partitions. I also upgraded
to the latest ybin version.

1. After a reboot from Mac OS 9 I can't get into the open firmware menu
pressing the 'option' key during boot. What I have to do is press the
Command-Option-O-F combination, the 'boot hd:11,yaboot' from where I
boot linux. In linux I run ybin which reloads yboot so at the next boot
pressing the 'option' presents the three menu options.

2. At some point I had a graphical menu for the selection of the OS to boot,
now the menu is text only. Why is that?

Thanks in advance,
-Arrigo
