Netscape Communicator- don't even bother

Post by Mark A. Davi » Fri, 18 Jul 1997 04:00:00

Just to let you all know, about 4 months ago I downloaded and tried the
Communicator beta... after a FOREVER download, because the thing is
HUGE, I loaded it and it crashed within 15 seconds of using it.  I tried
again and it crashed again with some other strange reason.

So I deleted it.

Yesterday I downloaded the latest and greatest version... tried it and
it also crashed immediately and strangely (differently).

So I deleted it.

My advice is to not even bother with it.  Netscape Navigator 3.0 works
fine, 3.01 works fine, 3.01 gold works fine.  In fact, I have been using
them pretty hard (and remotely) for quite a while now, and I am
impressed with the stability.

I wish Netscape would drop Communicator and work on the Navigator line.
Well, I am allowed a LITTLE "wishful thinking", aren't I?  :)

Hm, seems you have misconfigured something? Communicator works fine for
me and by the way: The Web browser is still Navigator. The name
Communicator just covers the whole thing of tools (eMail Client, News
Client, HTML Editor etc..)

I just tried Communicator 4.0 beta5 for SCO OpenServer 5.0.2.  It
installed and ran the Navigator and "Group" stuff fine.  However,
when I tried the editor, it crashed and core dumped.  Other than
that...it seems fine.  Though, I've only run it for about 3 hours
so far...!  ;-)

Running 5.0.4 I found that Commuicator 4.0 beta 6 is pretty stable but
when I downloaded 4.01 beta 6 it just went belly up on first boot.

Nope

Have you tried running it on a terminal yet?  We don't use the console.

It's not just the version for SCO.   It might be for all Unix
versions - but so far we have a field of 2 experiences, yours
on SCO and mine on SGI.

I've tried the tried the 2,3,4,5 beta releases.  The 5 was the
worst of the lot.

After a 5 minute download (T1's are *ive and I got to
netscape when their servers weren't busy - usually UT in Austin
is fastest for me.)  - a few minutes to install - I then brought
it up.   In the next day I had it totally exit - instantly gone -
at least 3 times - and once it crashed the machine.   Back to 3.01
with no problems.  Comminicator is not yet ready for prime time.

The 3.0x works fine on all platforms upon which I've used it.
That's Win31, 95, NT, SCO, SGI, Sun and Unixware.

Good choice.

My feelings too.

Hi

NC crashes here as well, I've found a site that crashes it every time. When I
first installied it, I looked at netscape for some suitable test pages, and one
of them http://www.onsale.com crashes NC4 every time. I think it's a memory
problem though, I've only got 16Mb here, and the rumour is that 64Mb is the
recommended minimum (can someone else confirm that ??)

BTW I've tried NC4 on SCO 5.0.2 and UnixWare 2.1.2, same problem

I should think so!

Agreed.  And I bet it has never even been TESTED by the people at
Netscape for remote use rather than just local.

Yup, that site crashes my 4.01b6 too.  I think its a java problem -
pretty much any site that uses java (not javascript, though - that seems
to work) coredumps my Communicator.  This is on an 80Meg RAM machine
(same thing happens on a 128Meg RAM machine too) - I don't think that's
the issue...  For a lot of large corefiles, visit
http://java.developer.com/pages ;)

I have not used netscape on SCO platforms, but I agree with the subject. I
tried it on windows95 - some betas and final version - no way (crashes,
eats resources etc. Deleted it) ! Tried it on Linux - betas up to
4.01beta6 - The last beta seems to be a bit useable, but anyway it crashes
frequently.

So, don't even bother.

btw. Neither www.onsale.com nor java.developer.com/pages/ break 4.01b6 for
Linux. This was real surprise to me that this linux version is so stable.
In fact it's much more stable than final win95 version.

Well, I am using it on both win95 and unixware 2.1.2, I never get any
problem. It's very stable and much better than IE 4.0 beta.
