Hello
I have a class C IP address with a mask of 255.255.254.0
My pc dual boots win95/OSR5 - I experience no problems with multi-day networking
sessions with win95. My cable modem is connected to my ISP's (also my cable TV
provider) DHCP server via TV coax cable. Currently my IP lease is next due
Friday 12:00AM
While in OSR, networking seems OK for a few hours (internet visible, netstat -r
displays its output quickly).
Then, my default route (normally pointing to the ISP's gateway) will disappear.
After manually adding it via the command line, sometimes the network will
immediately be available, sometimes not. A reboot always makes the network
re-appear.
Another symptom during the denial of service is 'netstat -r' takes several
minutes to display its few lines of output - sometimes the default route is
still there, sometimes not.
I found a SCO tech article that suggested a bunch of network status cmds to run.
I made a script to do this within a loop that displayed the cmd to be run, and
the current date-time, and started it running when my networking was alive. My
script was still running hours later when my networking became dead. I've
included output from this script at the end of this posting. The output is taken
from a time period where the network is OK, to when it flipped to dead. I don't
claim to understand every aspect of the output, so I apologize ahead of time if
something obvious to experts is blatantly staring at me.
I forwarded the output to my official SCO support provider last week, but have
not received a solution as of the time of this posting. They theorized maybe it
was my IP address lease renewal which was causing the problem
I also read an article in usenet from somebody who says certain ISP's may
periodically generate a packet that confuses SCO. The poster said to delete my
script in /etc/rc2.d that adds the default route to my ISP's gateway, and to
create a file named /etc/networks with a single line in it. I could provide
details - that solution didn't work for me.
I asked my ISP's techie about mystery packets, but they said they only send RFX
(I don't know what this is - maybe Radio Frequency X...), and that the problem
is within my SCO environment.
Anybody have suggestions as to the cause of my problem or what to do next?
Thank you

Collision Table - The number of frames successfully transmitted,
but involved in at least one collision:
Frames Frames
------- -------
1 collision 0 9 collisions 0
2 collisions 0 10 collisions 0
3 collisions 0 11 collisions 0
4 collisions 0 12 collisions 0
5 collisions 0 13 collisions 0
6 collisions 0 14 collisions 0
7 collisions 0 15 collisions 0
8 collisions 0 16 collisions 0
Bad Alignment 0 Number of frames received that were
not an integral number of octets
FCS Errors 0 Number of frames received that did
not pass the Frame Check Sequence
SQE Test Errors 0 Number of Signal Quality Error Test
signals that were detected by the adapter
Deferred Transmissions 0 Number of frames delayed on the
first transmission attempt because
the media was busy
Late Collisions 0 Number of times a collision was
detected later than 512 bits into
the transmitted frame
Excessive Collisions 0 Number of frames dropped on transmission
because of excessive collisions
Internal MAC Transmit 0 Number of frames dropped on transmission
Errors because of errors not covered above
Carrier Sense Errors 0 Number of times that the carrier sense
condition was lost when attempting to
send a frame that was deferred for an
excessive amount of time
Frame Too Long 0 Number of frames dropped on reception
because they were larger than the
maximum Ethernet frame size
Internal MAC Receive 0 Number of frames dropped on reception
Errors because of errors not covered above
Spurious Interrupts 0 Number of times the adapter interrupted
the system for an unknown reason
No STREAMS Buffers 0 Number of frames dropped on reception
because no STREAMS buffers were available
Underruns/Overruns 0 Number of times the transfer of
data to or from the frame buffer
did not complete successfully
Device Timeouts 0 Number of times the adapter failed to
respond to a request from the driver
