Openserver printing to Netware networked printers

Openserver printing to Netware networked printers

Post by Stie » Thu, 05 Nov 1998 04:00:00

I have a customer who has added an SCO Openserver 5.0.4 box, running a
medical billing software, to their office.
They currently print a large volume of pre-printed forms to an Epson DFX-5000
dot matrix printer on their Netware 4.01 server.  I originally thought of using
either
an HP JetDirect or Emulex print server to allow printing from both systems
(Netware & SCO) but would instead rather just print to the Netware queue from
the SCO server.  I have seen this done on an earlier SCO version at another
customer site but have never set it up myself.  My contact at that site is not
available right now.  How hard is this to set up and will the result be
reliable and
supportable?  The current printing environment is very stable.  Thankyou in
advance for your support.

Openserver printing to Netware networked printers

Greg,
I'm told by our Netware Gurus that Netware has an optional package
called Flex IP. This offers BSD printing and FTP interfaces for Unix boxes.
We use this from out unixware 2.1 boxes to drop files onto the Netware boxes
and send print jobs to printers in Netware land ( all our printers live
there) . The printers are configured in UnixWare as BSD printers. What
happens at the Netware side of things is something I don't want/need to know
about, I do an "lp" and the job turns up on the printer.

Rgds,
Stephen.

Hello Grant,

Thanks for the tip.  This looks like it's exactly what I was looking for.
 I'll
see if I can get the
guys configuring the box to give it a try.  If
not maybe they'll let me have crack at it.  Is
there a way of doing this using only TCP/IP?
Thanks again.

Once you have installed the IPX/SPX protocol on your network with the
correct network numbers (from Novell server) you can define printers
attached to Novell servers from ithin the printer manager under SCO Admin.

I usually do the following:

create a scoprinter user under netware with printer access permissions
create a scoprinter user on sco unix
create a script in /etc/rc2.d that logs the scoprinter user into the netware
server at startup
change the mode of the nwprint command to suid and change its owner to
scoprinter

This allows print jobs to go to the netware server without having to log
every individual unix user into the netware server.

Works well, except that you need to restablish the scoprinter login if the
netware server has been shut down.

1. printing / ipx networking / netware printers

folx,

i've posted this in a couple of newsgorups and received no reply,
however i am convinced that some bright soul out there knows something
about it (and it's driving me crazy).

I can't get printing to work with ncp filesystem package on linux
1.2.13.  netware ipx networking is fine.  i can mount filesystems,
attach to servers, read files, save files, delete files.  i can get a
list of printers with pqlist.  but when i print (using nprint) nothing
happens.  i get no error, i get no priting and it never shows up in the
print queue.

i don't think that i have linux printing set up properly, but i didn't
think that nprint used the lpd (which is running, btw).

if no one has done this, i will understand.  however, if you've got
nprint working, please PLEASE email or post a reply back to let me knwo
info about your expierences and source of success.

thanks much

todd
